Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council

Mission

The mission of the Annual Reviews Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council is to promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization that treats colleagues, volunteers, authors, and readers with respect, listens to and encourages different viewpoints, opinions, thoughts, and ideas, and embraces a culture of inclusion.

Activities, Duties, and Responsibilities of the DEI Council:

  • Promote a healthy, diverse work environment that fosters engagement and productivity.
  • Advocate for inclusion of underrepresented and marginalized groups (especially Black men) in the AR workforce.
  • Support a work culture that fosters the psychological meaningfulness of working for AR, psychological safety, and the psychological availability (defined as the physical, cognitive and emotional resources required to perform work tasks) of employees.
  • Make it personal —help all AR employees to understand conscious and unconscious bias, as they relate to what we see, our connection to others, and to our competence and leadership skills.
  • Take action publicly.
  • Focus on what we should do, not what we should not do, and offer solutions for positive change.
  • Strengthen our core values, policies, and practices at every step of our publishing process to engrain diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Incorporate DEI discussions in team meetings; add a question or discussion topic to the agenda; promote diversity, equity, and inclusion as a priority every day, not just now and then.
  • Practice transformational leadership and accountability for our actions, relationships, standards, and optimistic communication around our collective diversity, equity, and inclusion success.
  • Assess and provide feedback on the strategy approved by the AR Board of Directors to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion among Editorial Committees and in author invitations, and promote equity of access to AR content.

Coalition for Diversity & Inclusion in Scholarly Publishing (C4DISC)

Annual Reviews is a proud partner of the Coalition for Diversity & Inclusion in Scholarly Publishing (C4DISC) and supports the Joint Statement of Principles to make our community more diverse, equal, and inclusive. In principle and in practice, collectively, our organizations value and seek diversity and inclusive practices within the scholarly communications ecosystem. Our goal is to promote involvement, innovation, and expanded access to leadership opportunities that maximize engagement across identity groups and professional levels. Identity groups include and are not limited to:

  • ability/disability
  • age
  • appearance
  • citizenship status
  • ethnicity
  • gender and gender identity
  • geographic location
  • military/veteran status
  • nationality/national origin
  • political beliefs
  • pregnancy/parental status
  • professional career level
  • race/color
  • religion/value system
  • sexual orientation
  • socioeconomic background/social class

Collectively, we will provide leadership and commit time and resources to accomplish this objective while serving as a model to our members, as well as individuals and organizations engaged in DEI endeavors.
